2. Cities
The colonial cities of Nicaragua are simply beautiful. Cobblestone streets, magnificent churches, museums, and bright colors will have you captivated. Granada, founded in the 1500s by Spanish explorers, is the country’s biggest tourist attraction. The capital of Managua is just an hour away where you can see the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a big Nicaraguan city. Another city that may catch you interest is Leon. Although this town may seem like it is crumbling a bit, it has every bit of character you would hope for. Did I mention that this is also packed with young people, beautiful art galleries, and great museums?
3. Volcanoes
Known as the land of lakes and volcanoes, Nicaragua has at least 19 volcanoes in which almost all of them are active. The island of Isla de Ometepe has two of its very own, Maderas and Concepcion. You can reach this island by a ferry from Granada or San Jorge. There are plenty of volcano hikes for all skill levels and ages. For the thrill seekers out there, you may like to visit Cerro Negro, a volcano 2,400 ft. from sea level. This is the home to the very popular sport, volcano boarding, and it’s exactly like it sounds. You “board”/slide down the side of a volcano. Maybe you’ll find a new sport to love!
4. Tropical Vegetation
Almost one-fifth of the country is a national park or nature reserve. You will find lush tropical jungles and cloud forests unlike anything you’ve ever seen. These unspoiled rainforests are home to seven percent of the planet’s biodiversity. One great way to experience this is to take a canopy tour. Ranging anywhere from 10 ft. to 100 ft. in the air, you can experience life in a tropical rainforest. Along with being in a world of tropical greens, the wildlife you will see is countless. From birds and monkeys to reptiles and big cats, the rainforests in Nicaragua won’t leave you disappointed.
5. Accommodations
