When researching surf schools for an upcoming vacation, it is important to ensure it will meet all of your needs. With the plethora of options popping up in every known surf destination, the task of finding the right one for you can be daunting, but there are 5 major categories of things to look for.
-
Transportation
A good surf camp will offer you not only transportation from the airport, but more importantly to the right surf spots at the right times. Shuttles from the airport should be secure enough to carry you and your belongings safely to your destination. They should have an experienced driver who speaks English and is knowledgeable about area, tides, and weather conditions.
-
Accommodations
Accommodations should be clean and offer a sleeping arrangement that you feel comfortable in. After a long day of surfing, you’ll want to relax both your mind and your body. Surf camps with an onsite restaurant and bar are beneficial so that you can easily get the nourishment you need without having to plan for a trip into town. Having other amenities onsite like a pool and yoga is nice and can make your stay more relaxing. There should also be a variety of surfboards onsite for you to choose from and try out.
-
Experience
It is important to choose a surf school that has established contacts and an experienced instructor. A surf school that has been in business for awhile has worked all the kinks and can guarantee that your surf vacation runs smoothly. If there is a camp host on staff who oversees your whole trip, even better! Your surf instructor should have plenty of experience and be professional in his or her instruction. A good surf school will have someone whom they have been working with for a long time who knows how to teach beginners the basics on land before heading out to sea. Be careful of booking with pop-up surf camps that take your money for the reservation, but may not be around when it’s time for your trip.
-
School Size
The number of people at any given time at the camp is important to take into account. If there are too many guests, then perhaps your level of individual care may decline. Make sure your ratio is no more than 10 students to 1 instructor + an assistant.

Activities
Most people want to enjoy other activities besides surfing, even on a surf trip. Look for a surf school that offers fun excursion choices like sunset cruises, shopping or sight-seeing trips, and adventure options like zip-lining or horseback riding. Yoga can be a great addition to a surf trip. Some surf schools offer classes to get you warmed up before you surf or to relax and stretch you after they day’s workout.
Established in 2006, Mango Rosa excels at all five of these categories. We offer safe and reliable transportation from the airport, as well as a thrilling ride on “The Beast” to all the major surf spots.

Our instructor is local from San Juan del Sur with 8 years experience. He knows the area, the surf breaks, and the locals. He is professional and has a passion for teaching people to surf. We have a surf deck located within the resort where theory and practice can be taught in the morning before hitting the waves. Our instructor knows which breaks are best at what time of day and you can be confident in knowing you are at the right beach for your level and experience. Our schools are never more than 8 people and our Surf Host assists in the water when that number is maxed or we have clients who need more one-on-one help.
Our surf camps not only have the use of all our resort amenities and outside excursions, but we always have extra activities planned for our groups. Our beautiful boat, La Panga Rosa, will drop you at the perfect spot for you to paddle into a wave and cruise to a private beach where you can enjoy some chill time. We are notorious for our sunset bonfires on Playa Marsella, a quiet beach close to our resort. Yoga is available as well for our guests.
